Background:
The Soil Survey project aims to get digital soil information to aid in broad land use planning and agricultural expansion in the Northern Emirates in the United Arab Emirates. The survey will take advantage of Geographic Information Systems, satellite image processing and technological advances in remote sensing, computers, terrain analysis, geostatistics, GIS data integration and instrumentation that will make it possible to achieve unprecedented reliability and utility in the digital soil and thematic maps.
 
The project will be completed at scale of 1:50,000 using soil survey norms and standards modified to fit Northern Emirates conditions to generate soil, number of thematic maps, irrigated agriculture suitability, salinity and current land use maps. The Soil survey information is expected to be used by various groups of users, like the agricultural farming community, policy makers and land use planners, officials, decision makers, engineers among others. Capacity building of national manpower in soil survey methodology, soil classification and in collecting, updating and interpreting soil survey data will be an important component of the project. 
 
Responsibilities:


The person will undertake coordination of all the logistical aspects of the site based soil survey activities, laboratory analyses and database management, and maintain technical oversight of the project operations.
 
The person will also maintain a hands-on role with field survey activities and coordinate the day to day activities of all survey teams and also assist the Project Manager/Team Leader with all project reporting.
 
Education and work experience should provide evidence of the candidate's:


  • Minimum MSc Degree in Pedology/Soil Taxonomy from an international accredited University
  • At least 15 years proven experience in soil mapping in the Arid region soils
  • Excellent skills in project management to ensure the scope of work is technically coordinated
  • At least 10 years experience of applying the USDA Soil Taxonomy in a practical manner
  • Designing and conducting in training programs for capacity building
  • Experience of working with GIS and SDBMS in Soil Survey projects
  • Experience as soil correlator, QA/QC activities on soil mapping and maps
  • Worked with laboratory analysis, field data interpretation, compilation, presentation and reporting
  • Experience of working in the region is highly desirable
  • Strong interpersonal communication and writing skills
Language Skills:
Fluent in English
 
Specific requirements:
The Mapping Crew Leader will be full-time based in Abu Dhabi and conduct the field work in the Northern Emirates, UAE.
