 On June 11, 2010 Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen signed into law the "Soil Scientists Licensing Act of 2009."  Specifically, the bill creates licensure for the practice of soil science which is defined (in the bill) as, "[the] investigation, inspection, collection, or evaluation of soil as a means to classify soil pursuant to the use and application of the USDA soil taxonomy standard, as revised, or the interpretation,inventory, planning, or mapping resulting from classifying soils."   The passage of this legislation is monumental for the profession of soil science in Tennessee.

EPA’s rule on controlling stormwater runoff on construction sites went into effect this month. The rule marks the first time the EPA has imposed national monitoring requirements and enforceable numeric limitations on stormwater discharge from jobsites.

Most livestock producers, soil scientists favor index that considers phosphorus likelihood that it would leave the land.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is seeking proposals to provide technical assistance pertaining to soil science, hydrology, engineering, fluvial and hillslope geomorphology, wetland science, and botany. Those selected would be contracted through a 2 year master services agreement, from which task orders would be issued on an as needed basis.

Water rights are traditionally states rights, with federal control over harbors and deeper water necessary to commerce. To protect water quality we had the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948.

Preventing erosion, and detaining sediment during development is critical.

The ability of soil to retain applied phosphorus depends on the P sorption capacity and physico-chemical properties of soils. There are myriad ways to characterize P sorption capacity. I am on the hunt for commercial labs that work in this area. Any suggestions? I'll post more as I learn more.
